I'd suggest give players checkpoints across the maps that they can respawn at after they die. Give them unlimited lives (or at least more then 1), but also give them a time limit to get to the end, because this whole 1-life-then-gameover thing kinda...well...sucks.

-run the mpq editor (winmpq)
-open c/programs/warcraft3/war3.mpq or war3x.mpq (warx.mpq is the expansion file) with winmpq
-extract the terrain file you want to change/edit
-run warcraft 3 viewer and convert the blp file to tga
-open the convert/tga file with photoshop and now you can edit
-now convert the tga file back to blp file with the warcraft 3 viewer
-run the worldeditor and import the file with the correct path (you can see the right path on the file you extract with winmpq)
-save the map and restart the worldeditor
first you need some programs:
warcraft 3 viewer
mpq editor (winmpq)
photoshop (or something like that)
