This deserved to win, but I have one gripe:
How the **** could they give that a TEN for Originality? What with the story being entirely copied and all?
Good job, Anitarf and Infrane.
Awesome cinematic. Great job.
How can you say that wasn't amazing? Music was good, in my opinion. Every hit and miss had a sound effect, and as I watched I kept wondering how you managed to time everything so perfectly. It had good story arcs, and I understood exactly what was going on without needing any dialog. Not many cinimatics did that, which is why I think this one was so great.

Battles didn't get repetative for me either, and I think this one blew away the other ones. Terrain was good, and it made me see that you can pull off a realistic looking icey wasteland without any doodads, just white snow and a lot of wind.

And I do have to say nice job on the music, it didn't fit entirely well with the cinimatic, but with the time you were limited to, it deserves more credit than it's getting.

4.9/5, just because it's not quite perfect, but pretty damn close for a 5 minute movie.

And it sounds like uberfoop is jealous, just how he only points on the "bad" things (in his opinion) about this cinimatic, yet has nothing good to say about it =P
I did compose the music, and the reason why some people think it sux will basically be the reason that it was recorded from midi. I dont have an orchestra at my hands so it was all a bit hard to get the right instruments in the first place. I hope this will be fixed later on if I buy a program like.. lets say.. fruity loops, which can place real instrument recordings over midi notes.

We did (for the main cinematic function) not use any action that works like a wait. We had a periodic event running the entire cinematic checking in a database stored in game cache to execute the events stored.
If you look at the Scene1Init trigger you will see alot of functions there, all those functions combined store the entire cinematic in the game cache so there will be no desyncs with events. Using it is quite simple, just copy the triggers from the map, setup the actors and camera's and you're free to use it, just study it a bit ;)
Same goes for the smooth camera, we store the transitions in the game cache and let the periodic event calculate its route to follow.
Just a question: In the credits you wrote music by iNfraNe. So did you compose and produce it completely on your own?
I think it was OK, and if you did actually compose it on your own, that deserves much more respect than saying "it sucks" like Uberfoop. If you didn't make it on your own, don't write "music - iNfraNe".
If you make a director's cut, try to update the music aswell. I think it could reflect the fight a little better and be a little more glorifying...

Your arguments for using JASS are of course correct, but now help a little the poor normal mapper community using moreover the "sucking GUI". So which function do you use for waiting? If there is a better one than these two GUI functions, please show it to me, because I also have always these timing problems... :?

By the way, you can do smooth cameras using GUI, although it's not that easy and requires much care... I'm really interested in your way using the camera, you should teach it to me! :D
you could also just make 1 model and do everything with that, but that wouldnt be really.. smart now would it?

The way you suggest would just be like any other cinematic:
• having ugly transfers between cameras, or too many instant changes (im not saying you cannot make a good cinematic with it, but im saying it IS better with a smooth camera)
• lagging like shit cuz SetUnitPosition is slower than SetUnitX&Y
• desyncing like hell cuz TriggerSleep is different on each comp and I'd just like to see you make a cinematic in periodic event or timers only without jass.

Im not telling bullshit, nor am I saying im "teh god of jass" or something. Im just saying jass is better than GUI, cus it just IS, its a fact. And I didnt even brought it up, someone asked so I answered, you dont even have anything to do with it.
ahem, why do you need handle vars in the cinematic? as far as i can see, you could do the whole thing with fade filters, change unit flying height, camera functions, move unit (instantly) loops, animation playing, and sound effects. which is basically what cinematics are always composed of. what im saying is, you could make a basically equal cinematic in gui. and just cuz you know jass doesnt mean that yer better then every1 else, so quit the whole 'zomg you cant do this R0fL y0u nUBCA;EK!!!!!!'

look, im not here to argue, but telling every1 this BS about jass is kinda lame and retarted. sure, you cant use handle vars, but why would you need to?
that cinematic is great, the special effects are awesome, the battle scene too and the music goes very well with the action and is very well synchronized, great job however you shouldn't have so much points on the story because you took one that existed but still, to me, for 5 minutes that's not important

Keep up the good work !
heh Infrane de beste mappers komen uit nederland en belgie:P

But do make the movie, I am axcious to see it, I was suprised to see you did not make any other cinematic before this one however.
try making functions in gui. Failed? why? oh wait, you cannot. Therefore you cannot have H2I in GUI and therefore you cannot make handle vars, which the cinematic is based on.

Before even starting the cinematic it is completely loaded in game cache. Try making that in gui.

Warnicro: ja, na dat we onze huidige projecten hebben afgemaakt gaan we een film maken. Het script is al klaar :P.
Kzal ook jouwe kijken, maak hem maar snel af dan :P
we did it in jass cus gui isnt capable of doing shit like this. GUI sux ass and thats why we used jass.

ahem, what isnt gui capable of doing in relation to that cinematic exactly? and as far as me not having proper arguements, i said the queing was way off. hows that not a proper arguement? queing problems are a fact, not an opinion. admitedly saying music choice sucked was more opinionated, but imho it didnt fit the cinematic AT ALL. its not a bad cinematic, quite the contrary, but it just isnt amazing. it didnt leave me saying 'wow' anyway.
heh heh, nice job, and congrats on your first place, you should really continue.
I hope you will watch my cinematic which is gonna be released before the end of the year:P, I had a contest map as well, which was pretty decent, but I did not come to finish it (too much work).
But really awesome work once more.

About the Jass, , all can be done with gui as well...

About beating TGN, well blizzard vote right, not mine, I think TGN is a bit more inovative on story and a bit better in making more different action scenes. (I explained more on the blizz forum)

You should really release that version you described, also you should make more cinematic and compete along with me in I hope a next contest cinematic. :D
we will make a directors cut version. It will have the scenes that were cut due to timelimit and all the small fixes that have been missed due to deadline.
On the contrary, all that could have been done with GUI...it just would have taken a hella lot more work.

Excellent cinimatic. Well worth first place in the contest, and well worth a Director's Choice here. Not much room for improvement in my opinion. Perhaps now that you dont have a 5 minute resitriction you could expand it some?

we did it in jass cus gui isnt capable of doing shit like this. GUI sux ass and thats why we used jass.

as for u uberfoob, I respect your opinion, but just saying stuff sux without proper arguments sounds a bit lame 2 me. And besides, if you really think the vision was better why do u think we won this contest if TGN's new cinematic was better than the vision anyway??
meh, the music choice sux and doesnt que at all with the cinematic, nor does it go with the theme. the battle stuff was decently done but too repetative. the sound is anoying. i hated the camera. not saying i could do better, just throwing stuff up.
4/5

btw IggyZ, if this is the best cinematic youve ever seen, have you ever tried Birth of Shadows-The Vision?

edit: btw waldbar, whats wrong with using jass? if people always made maps just so that other people could learn from it, nobody would ever get to play games.
It's very well done, no doubt. Although there could have been some more details in scenery I think.
All in all 4.9/5, I'd say. :)

But why the hell did you do nearly everything exclusively in JASS? It's nearly impossible to learn anything from it, but some things, especially the smooth camera movement would have been very nice for every cin. If you protected the map really it would have been nearly the same effect...
Nice to watch, but nothing to learn from. What a pity! :(
This deserves the title of "Best Cinematic Ever"
Awesome, this is the winner of the Blizzard's cinematic contest. :P
