This system is designed to give the ability to add assistance messages to a death text. Example:

Player X has been killed by Player Y with assistance from Player B and Player M.

Nope it still doesnt work properly
put your hero (player 1) and your allies lets say player 2 till 6
and put player 7 as your enemy
attack him
wait 10 seconds or even 1 minute
let the others kill him now
you'll still get assistance

The system is bugged, try to kill heroes with the whosyourdaddy cheat, and then type whosyourdaddy again. Wait 10 seconds or more. The units that got killed and didnt attack still get the assistance. They dont get reset until you die....
