How do you Make Models?

I'm just wondering what applications are required for making models and what is the cost?-($, Mb,Kb,Gb etc)

3dsmax5 preferably
5 is about 3000$
and a VERY high amount of mb
making models and geting the program isnt something you do overnight...you learn and acomplish it over weeks and months.

can someone help me i dont want tthem to do anything big just some small modeling like taking stuff of one thing and on to another eg giving a captain a preist cape and a wand to make armoured magi can some one help me to do this?

I think you can get 3dsmax freely ... a trial if u know how to search.....but 3dsmax 4 or 5 is hard to find.But get g-max the basic program wich is free
