This was asked many times, but i will give you the answer, i was having same trouble. For example you have a custom skin of a sorceress, you have the use the path to the original sorceress of warcraft 3. But note that you can't use the original sorceress after you aplly the skin. I think this is what you have to do, if im wrong post here.
