a rookie's question - what is JASS?

I'm not quite sure what is JASS used for? Can you give as much information as you can about it?

Please... make a sticky thread "What is JASS?" some mod.
JASS is the scripting language used for wc3 triggers. People use it in spells since there are some advatages in JASS that GUI can't do.
