Icon Contest: Awe Clash - Results are up!
Awe ClashHello. I’m happy to announce you that I am starting a new contest, this time an icon contest. Once again, there will be a number of categories. Each category will have its own rules but the judging method will be the same. Here are the categories (/sections), and their rules:
1. Merge Section – You are to create an icon based only on Blizzard’s already existent icons. This means that you can only copy-and-paste from Blizzard’s icons to obtain something new. You can erase parts of the icons, to get something new. Keep in mind that the newly obtained icon must be different from the icons it is made from. You can use as many icons as you want. You are allowed to use only the following tools and filters: smudge, rotate canvas, transform, hue/saturation. You are allowed to use different blending modes for layers. Note that only Warcraft 3 icons are allowed here, so no Starcraft, Diablo, WoW or any other game except Warcraft III (RoC and TFT).
2. Item Section – In this section you are required to create an icon for an item. You are allowed to use any type of item you want (armor, weapon, boots, jewels etc) but you are not allowed to CnP here. The icon must be completely freehand (except glow and other effects). You are allowed to copy the shape of the icon.
3. Ability Section – The icons submitted here must be made so that they can be used by a spell/ability already existent in warcraft (Blizzard ability) or not. You aren’t allowed to CnP here either.
4. Creep Section – You must make an icon for an already existent unit (only Blizzard). The only restriction is that it may not be a screenshot of the unit or taking an already existent icon of that create. So freehand! Yeah, I know it sounds challenging.
5. Dazzle Section – For this section you should make extremely good looking icons. Rays, glows, good-looking effects.
6. Free Section – You may use any techniques you want here. Preferably combine more. Filters, mirroring, recoloring, CnPing and of course, freehand. Make sure you read the additional rules.
Additional Rules
These rules apply to all the sections so make sure you respect them all.
a) Copy-and-Paste doesn’t mean only Blizzard icons. It includes other user icons from the site, icons from other games or even CnP from images (such as googled images).
b) Crappy icons are not allowed for any of the sections. Plain recolors, mirroring or other simple icon modifications of already existent icons are against the rules and will removed from both the site and the contest.
c) Icons submitted must follow the rules of the site. If they break any of the submission rules they will be removed from the contest and deleted from the site.
d) In the case in which I allowed CnP strictly from Blizzard icons you are not allowed to use any other source (other games icons, images or other users icons). In the case in which I allow any CnP you are allowed to use other users icons with their acceptance and you must credit them for their work. Credits include icons from other games as well. Any icon breaking this rule will be removed from the contest.
e) You may enter only with one icon/section. Moreover, you can’t enter with an icon in more than one section.
f) You can enter to as many sections as you like.
Rating System
You can get up to 50 points. The points are given in the following way:
- General Aspect – 30 points. I am interested here in how the icon looks, the way it was realized. I will subtract points for the following facts: bad shading (or non-existent), too bright/dark icons or blurred. It should look good overall. Also, the icon should preferably be colored, meaning no monochromatic allowed. Realism will also be judged here. If you are trying to imitate a material, it should look like that material in your icon (example of material: metal) If your icons respects all these stuff or almost all, then you’ll get an important part of the points.
- Implementability – 10 points. The icon should be made in the standard warcraft 3 style, having the border. Also, the icon should be useful, so that it can be used in warcraft 3. It should be something concrete, not another of those totally abstract icons, like a pattern or something.
- Creativity – 10 points. Your icons should be original and creative. I wouldn’t like to see fireball icons, or only hands, which unleash rays of light. It should be something (relatively) original icon and well designed.
