How do you use a skin on a custom units?

Skin is used by model (not for specific unit), either for already existent Blizzard model or custom model made by another person. So if you use skin for sorceress model, all units which use sorceress as model with reskinned, regardless it custom unit or not.

So if i got a model and used archer as the base model then how will i put a skin on it?

You should import the skin and set the path to the right path of archer. See skinning tutorials on sticky, there are tutorial which will guide you.

Custom models require custom skin paths.

to skin a scratch custom model, the model maker MUST make a uvw map if he does not the model does not wat the hell is going on.
