Glows and Lighting

Attached is an image of an Energy Sword model I created for my Halo mod. I want the model to pulse a blue/pink light. The only way I see to accomplish this is to change the color of the model itself over time, however that does not really give off a glow. Does anyone know how I could add a good glow effect to a model such as this?

Omnilight effect?

I'd have to go with Omnilights on the two blades as well

However will it really create a strong glow, not just a color overlay?

Warcraft is pretty poor at lighting, so I'd go with a massive pile of billboarded planes for glow, like Arthas's sword.

That's what I thought too, it just wont look very nice. I'll see how they look.
