Equiping system. I know its do-able, but how?

Has anyone played Final Fantasy Forever? It had a system where if you clicked the item icon, it woud "equip" the item, like a normal RPG would do. All the effects are in place, but the item doesn't take space in your inventory. How do you go about doing this?
