NO! Vertex modifier has no special things as adding vertices and polygons, bones, animating and primitives! Use Milkshape!

Bustr_Bladr has it right. Use Milkshape. And worship at the altar of RDZ too, 'cause he knows all the tricks when it comes to the exporting and finalisation.

EDIT: Oh yeah, in conjuction with kdub's exporter, you might want to check out the Finaliser.
