i saw the poll.. for the site to lose quantity.. and i voted quality... and its 66%.. why is this site still slow? why havnt u deleted OLD ask forums.. idc much about the maps... just theirs sooo many forums that are unused... VGsatomi, plz tell me?
The forums play little part in the site's speed. Deleting old topics wouldn't do much good. Maps are the biggest problem for file size issues. Why didn't you post this in the topic with the poll?
VGsatomi is a guy. Don't let avatars fool you. I don't really look like mine.
Ok, time to introduce you to the concept of bandwidth
Bandwidth is the ammount of data a computer or server can send in a given time
Bandwidth is expensive and used to be very rare, and is now still expensive
Because we're a popular site, we go through terabytes of bandwidth from people downloading things. Not from looking at the forums, as the text that makes up the forums is, what, a few kilobytes
Hence, to fix the speed, we'd need to prevent several million people from coming here and delete... Oh, all of the maps section
SO S T F U ABOUT THE SPEED UNLESS YOU'RE A NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR
No, I'm not a network administrator, but I'm not listening to anyone unless they are. Hence, your opinion is stupid and is useless
it's not the forums that need to be cleaned, it's the resource sections, there is soo much crap that is just totaly useless, but still they get downloaded. if they are deleted people can't download them anymore, maynbe it won't increase the speed of the site much but the resource sections will look a lot nicer.
Heh, deleting stuff that gets routinely downloaded completely defeats the purpose of this site. Are we not here to spread maps and material around the community? -VGsatomi
if the map or resource is useless, then what's the use in leaving it on the site, you don't always see right away that something is useless, sometimes only after you donwloaded it.
Well, one reason I have not made it more strict yet is that the only fair way to judge maps is by playing them, I simply do not have the time to test every map that comes in. Basically, we are short handed. Second, by who's standard should we go by? Darky said we wanted a balance of quantity and quality after he saw my poll, just as long as the maps in question aren't "rubbish".
I would immedially implement a "not edit of other people's map" rule but that is a problem when I dont know who the original authors are on many of these maps. If anyone is willing to help me in that, then that would be made much more smoothly. -VGsatomi
You could just implemetn the rule and try to keep up and test as many maps as possible, a lot will probably still brake the rules, but some wont, so I think that if you add a rule like that the "me too" maps will decrease a bit.
and of course you also need to search for new staff members

Dude, do you know what BANDWIDTH is?
Yes, we could compress them. Hell, WE DO COMPRESS THEM. DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT A ZIP FILE IS?
And it wouldn't mind how many we have. There's still the fact that we could replace everything with 1 kb files and STILL BE SLOW. HOW COME? BECAUSE LOTS OF PEOPLE DOWNLOAD STUFF, THUS USING OUR BANDWIDTH
