Modelling and Skinning

Hey, ive been creating maps for a long time, but Ive never delved into the skinning and modelling aspects. What programs should I use to create models and skins? Note that Im a begginer to this, so a lower level program might be best. Please say the name of the program and where I can find it.

ok... I was hoping youd spend 5 seconds to reccomend one. Ive checked the site, but im not sure the name of what im looking for, plus all the articles here are about using certain editors, not which are the best. Please just help me out!
