How to attachment guns to a marine (properly)

Im having some difficulty attaching weapons to a marine. I want the weapon to be across his arms, rather than held by his left or right arm, but dont know how to do this as I have limited modelling experience. How would i go about doing this?

If you attach it to weapon, and the gun model is not wanky, it should all be fine.
