If you want to save this site, or pretty much maintain the big community and bring it over to the Hive, so a large portion of wc3 modding doesnt die>
Simply prioritise. Out of all the resources, what does this site have that others doesnt. Its is mainly:
- Models - Skins - Icons
Id strongly recommend just bringing them over to the database ASAP!!!!!!!!!!.
========
Sacrifices have to be made
- Maps are pretty much irrelevant. Give it 1 week and ull have another new 100 uploaded. Anyone can upload any maps they like, not made by them if need be.
- Tools the real important ones are on wc3camp. If need be transfer them as well
- Spells, most of them are pretty crap as well. There are a few cool ones in there. But just like maps, give it a week and it will flourish once more.
========
My conlusion, theres no need to talk talk and talk more.
- Just take the top 3 resource types, dump them on the Hive. - Do what you said with forums, transfer all topics/posts etc. and users.
=======
Lastly, one of the most important things.
- Hack into wc3sear.ch make it auto re-direct to the hive. AND / Or - VG make a news announcement telling everyone gogo to Hive.
=======
There we go done and dusted. May not be perfect but oh well.
So Ralle if you want Hive to be the new main wc3 modding site, hurry hurry hurry
I pretty much agree with Fulla, those are the things WC3S is unike on... Like she said Maps and Spells will come back very fast.
Fulla, I say that if you delete spells you ought to delete skins and models as well, the "most of them are crap anyways" argument also applies to models and skins.
daxtreme... it also depends what do you mean by good? Eyecandy or skill required to program it. Not like I'm fighting with you to get the purger job or something, there would be few of these guys anyway, and I don't believe i'd get one.
Also I disagree about previous posts saying to delete everything except models, skins and icons. Why? There are many interesting spells (especially in spellpacks). JASS scripts are also useful, although 90% of them could be found on wc3jass. But they are text files, so all jass and ai would take like 80 MB.
some arts are also high quality, you could get werewulf or someone with time to run through them.
how much space consumes spells? cca 200MB. That means that delete of spells will not help reduce total 8GB. And more importantly spells are inspirative.
Models consume cca 600MB - big piece, but not enough. Deletion of WoW models will not hurt and will help to decrease that 50-100 MB (25-50% of spell section).
Tools 100MB - all of them are obsolote and so can be deleted.
Skin consumes - who knows? But I say it is betwen 100 and 500MB and skin are much less useful than models (big skins are useless in multiplayer and even 50kb skins is not small for that purpose)
Maps - yes, It is sad, but there is thousands of maps and much of them excedes 1MB (and many have around 5MB). If we banish maps, we will lost, but most of the map can be downloaded elsewhere and I cant say same to resources. Im sure this is maps that consumes major part of space - few GB I say and that space can host lots of resources.
This site is NOT such favorite for its maps, but for its resources - models, icons, skins (but IMO it can be deleted) and spells and this is what should be kept.
This debate is useless. Even if half of the resources were deleted, the site would still exceed the quota by 3.5 gb. That's a matter that requires actions from the site owner (good luck with it ).
- Models and Skins wont be uploaded again once deleted. - New spells can simply be uploaded like maps to replace old ones.
For someone to go through the spells, sorting good from bad would take years and opions on spell quality are extremely diverse amongst everyone.
Maps + Spells just have to go. Save the Models/Skins/Icons.
Tell me you are not saying that checking models is less difficult unless you plan on judging them from screenshots which is pretty retarded
---
Edit: Simply remove everything, if people won't upload either they don't want to or they are no longer active in wc3 so their things would be obsolete anyways.
I think you should only keep models, skins and icons and maybe the DC awarded spells.
@Vexorian: Yes , it might be hard to sort the models out, but some you can just ignore by just looking at the screenshot. Others you might have to test in a map indeed. But if you just test about 10 - 15 in one map at a time, you would be done after a few days of hard work. If you got about 3-5 people working through them of course.
@Alvatar: I disagree with you about the skins. They ARE very useful, as they dont take that much space and you can make some models look so much different and can use the models on so much different ways. And compared to models they don't take that much space actually...
So Ralle, get some people to go through the skins, models and icons, then put those files over at hiveworkshop... Now let's quit talking and start getting to work
