How do you make good freehand icons?

I find myself completely unable to create good icons from scratch using Gimp 2.0 (although this would probably the same with photoshop, or microsoft paint). How do you guys manage it?
Also note: I am a crappy artist in real life, with no sense of dimensions or light, and an unsteady hand, could that be effecting me?

Read tutorials, practice drawing, use the tools, take some time, try to be accurate

i draw an outline pixel by pixel, if the outline is good i fill in pixel by pixel then blue/smudge to blend it.

ah Tiki you just made me thought of something I forgot to say:

The paint brush size should be around 1 - 5 and doesn't have to be at 100% capacity
