I don't know of a way to compress .mdx files. I don't believe such a way exists.

You can do a *lot* of .blp compression before it becomes noticeable.

You can make all imported icons use existing DISicons, or one common imported DIS icon, to cut down on icon imports.

Remove or reset unnecessarily-customized objects and delete unused triggers.

Some programs can clean up triggers and remove extra information from a map, like HeavyLock, and that also usually reduces map size a bit.

The biggies are usually models and skins. Once you've compressed your skins, take a look through your models and decide which ones you actually need to have. Sometimes there are some that are really just extra, that don't serve a useful purpose.
