The WC3 art tools only work for versions 4 and 5. You may want to look into Gmax if you are out of luck...

AND no one has made an alternative for Max 7 yet. So yeah, Max 7 is useless for WC3 modding

Script for importing models to 3D Max from Warcraft: http://www.infoceptor.com/files/war3/MDXimporter.zip and
a script for exporting from 3D Max also as a mdl or mdx: http://race.wc3campaigns.com/MDXExport.mse

You can only make models, animations and UVs with the MDXEport script.
