What does JASS do?

Help! I don't understand the point of JASS. Can someone please tell me what it is used for?

JASS is the scripting language that Blizzard used when making Warcraft 3. You can use JASS to ake custom spells, powerful triggering (I think you're able to call up local variables) etc. I don't really know much about JASS, since I've never used it before, but I think there are some good tutorials on it at Warcraft III Campaigns.
