If you get a gray box i think it is because your using a custom theme i used the world of warcraft them from www.worldofwarcraft.com and i got a gray box i switched back to the normal theme and i can use this now same with WE helper
Good tool for making models. But how can I put particle emmiters in the place i desire. I put a particle emiter in the head, which says maybe 'BoneHead' in the node manager but still it goes bottom. How could I put the particle emmiter in the body' head, not the bone's head?
For sure no doubt about it, this is the best modeling program ever! I downloaded it and after a day of having it I had figured out how to use the whole thing. Its simple extremely fast and easy to use. I tried GMAX before but it makes no sense this makes modeling to be a quick task. (Besides making the skin) Wonderful program. Much thanks to the submiter Magos.
any of you that say that this is worthless, pointless of even dling it.... you couldn't be even more wrong. I like this it'll let me do some things I've been waiting to do.
Very easy to use with War 3 Viewer, then u can apply skins and preview them that way, and then make them models with the Model Editor, after which u can import them into ur map.
ok, need some help please. when i attempt to open the editor, it gives an error: -------------------- unable to open: "C:/Documents and Settings/<user>/bureaublad/war3modeleditor/war3mpq"! make sure that warcraft 3 is installed and that the regfisrty key "HKEY_current_user/Blizzard entertainment/warcraft III/installpath" EXISTS! -------------------- or something very similar to that...
i checked if i could still play warcraft II TFT, and i could.. reg stuff is right where it should be...
I downloded this "Model Editor" and puted it into my home computer after a little studying of the programm it CRASHED and now it doesn't work what could be the problem
I get a grey box, and i know that it means i haven't loaded a model yet, or done anything, but i can't open or start on a model because the menu itself won't show
also, the entire help file is unreadable, tried to use it, but all i got was pages saying "This page cannot be read", or something like that....
can i get some help correcting that so that i can use the tool
Questions/Comments ppl ask... by just reading these, i ( and probably Magos too ) am/are thinking please RTFM...
-VGSatomi - the reason it gives so many errors is that WinZip sucks . the .dll files have to be in certain folders, but WinZip auto - removes these folders. the only other problems people seem to be having is an old DirectX
-Other PPl getting crashes When you remove stuff like Team Color, you have to remove all the bones, materials, textures, etc. that reference that Geoset otherwhise wc3 will crash. this has NOTHING AT ALL to do with this program, it has to do with wc3 being picky about models.
-Asking about the Grey Box This IS the editor. It wont just Magically read your mind to find out what model you want. you have to open one or load one from an MPQ first.
-Attachment Corruption I cant reproduce that, seems like you're not staying updated.
-Merging Geosets Make sure you are attaching them to the appropriate bones
This is really an amazing tool
i love the new Model Editor option, and cant wait for the Geoset Editor!
I'm too lazy to read all the posts, so I'll just mention this in case no one else has:
I've discovered a little problem with this program (actually, Norinrad discovered it and let me know). When you use this to save a model as .mdx, it screws up the attachments and they don't work when you import the model into wc3. But if you keep the model in .mdl until you've finished it, then use Yobgul's File Converter to change it to .mdx, then the attachments work just fine.
So yeah, just thought y'all should know, in case you were having this problem.
I can't make a team glow because when I try to make TeamGlow a .geo file it says: 'Unable to save "TeamGlow.geo", unknown extension "geo"!' What do I do?
uh, there's a new problem now. when I try to open the model editor, only a gray box appears on my screen, and nothing seems to happen. what should I do with it?
Make sure when entering a filename you enter the extention too, like "Yada.mdx" instead of just "Yada".
Unfortunately you require TFT (this will be fixed in the future). You could create dummy MPQ's and place them in Warcraft's folder, meaning War3x.mpq, War3xLocal.mpq, War3Patch.mpq! Simplest way is to rename a war3 map as they are mpq's too (and not too big in size).
I was able to edit the registry so that the editor won't request for the mpq file path. however, this time, it's asking for a war3patch.mpq path in the registry. do I have to have the latest version of warcraft for this to work?
Hey Magos, why can't i save a model when i edited one, I clicked File -> Save as, and then when i tried to save it, it said: "unable to save "C:\Program Files\warcraft III\MyModel",unknown extension"
On the windows tab i can open the animation controller ,node manager MPQ browser, but why can't i open the model editor? can somebody help me please!!!!!
well this would be very useful if I could get a already made model in there such as editing the spirit healer so it's a hell weaver or makeing a firey illidan or a icy Kezzak or awesome Flaming alpha ghost... so is it possible to get a already made model in this creation?
This is the best tool ive found so far for model editing, but i cant figure out how to make any animations or apply skins yet... and the help file is EXTREMELY useless. Could you put some tutorials on your website or something, cause im really confused.
All of you having problems, have you actually tried downloading the LATEST VERSION 1.05 from the link above, NOT directly from this site? The lazy admins here won't reply to my requests of updating the program version...
Whoooaa. This program sucks. It won't even open. gives me 'Unable to create 3d device' and i have directx 9c.There is no tool for 3d modeling on war3 on the net that really works.Gmax doesn't work either. If you run the Importer\Exporter script in gmax it won't apear at all.Only Oinkerwinkles program works but it's a bit hard to edit with.Probably Blizzard's tools for 3dsmax work but i can't get 3dsmax,neither Milkshape. So in conclusion MODELING IN WC3 A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME OR SHOULD I SAY IMPOSSIBLE!
13 complaints from ~5000 downloads, half of which has a poor DirectX version or some other simple error that is explained in the help files. Doesn't sound too bad to me!
If you're having trouble running the program I need a bit more info than "IT DOESN'T WORK, FRIKKIN WORTHLESS PROGRAM!". Supply OS, DX version, Platform, GFX Card, etc... so I have at least some chance of improving compatibiliy issues.
But note that this is a fanmade program with 0$ budget made on my own spare time with 0 profit.
First, we'll worry about it being an actual working program, then we'll discuss it being a free, $0 fan-make. Because right now in here I'm seeing failure after failure, and the worst part about it is that they all seem to be completely different problems. You may say "you get what you pay for," but when you post a program to the public, the public will generally expect it to be in a somewhat working condition. -VGsatomi
Check/double check/triple check/quadruple check in the register editor (regedit) that you have the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III\ with the variable InstallPath.
SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH-WOAH BACK UP Ok pretty much i save it-open it with winzip and extract it into a folder, and its a bunch of files one of which has an EXE. so i go to it and i just go balistic cuz this is proably the 50 time its asking is i even HAVE warcraft downloaded and if so it asks if theres this registry key thingy with a huge path to where its supposed to be.[/b] HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP [i]oh and also i dl it again and it comes up with the registry key thingy-everytime if i dont re-dl it it says it cant open it
I have the worst problem ever. When I open it it gives me an error saying 'Unable to create 3d Device' and I also have the last direct X version. In the FAQ i says that this problem is caused by integrated graphic card. What can i do?I REALLY NEED THIS PROGRAM TO FINISH MY CAMPAIGN.Please help!!! P.S:Is there other programs that can create custom loading screens?
When openeing this programme, if you get a message that says "unable to create a direct 3d object" it's because you're graphics card isn't good enough. I have 2 comps, tried it on my first one which has some n00b 32mb graphics and then tried on my comp with an ATI Raedeon X800GTO and it opened fine.
I've just opened this programme and what I want to know is where do find the models used in world editor and of course the actual game. Do they need to be extracted from world editor somehow or is there some easy straight forward way that I'm missing cos I'm n00b?
wow, this is great finally able to remove and add teamcolor (used to be a real problem in the past) and now it's possible to remove weapons and then give new ones as attachments.
But is there anywhere a tutorial for making animations? because in the help file just reads:"but this is a bit tricky so I won't explain it here" (It's from the tutorial General "BigSword")
I have tried modelling before with different programs and Im going to try this one too...
How long does it take to learn basic modelling? Of course it depends on how fast you learn, but does it take years, months, weeks or days to learn it ?
before i reformated my comp it work and now since i reformated and dl a wc3 and used my* key code it and install, i run magos tool and it says it cant find the Regestry key and path of it, i think..install key.. hmm..does this mean my wc3 is evil or its not moduled right or a prob with magos? Edit: oh yeah, and i do have dx9
I downloaded it after 3 attempts and that stupid archive is damaged or something and i can't extract it.Could someone attach that programm to an e-mail and send it to me at [email protected]?Please help because my net connection sucks.
It is NOT fully compilable, it's only meant as an educational source!
To all of you who talk trash about this program, fine it's your opinion and I respect that. But note that this is a fanmade program with 0$ budget made on my own spare time with 0 profit. If you expect such a program to be perfect in any way then I feel sorry for you. To all of you who liked this program thanks! To all of you who hate it, I can't wait until you finish a better one...
How could something ever be so crap as this, and not work at all . . .
utterly amzing, but in a VERY bad way !
p.s: if you dont understand the above, i will put it simply: this tool does not work for anybody at all it is just total crap and not worth the electricity bill of 0.1p for downloading it. lol .
-_- Come on now. Instead of "wad is this omfg!!!!"-ing around, you could google the file.. Also, assuming from the name, I think it's a DirectX 9 component.
This tool is really great. But I have 2 problems. 1) I removed glow from the beast master and then saved and imported 2 my map, but when I try to set some1's model to the imorted, WE crashes. 2) I Resised, Recoloured and gave another type to all the particles of the water elemental, but the one on his head doesnt work ingame (it does work in the model editor) U see it like some little sparks (not the particle I made)
WiLfReD-T, u can browse models with the MPQ-Browser. (The white screen is the editor
Hey wad's d3d9.dll? when i wanted to use it, it says cannot find d3d9.dll...Wad's that? and they said reinstalling might fix the problem but i did and.... IT DID NOT WORK!!!!
Says it can't open the "splatdata.txt" for me even though its right there in the same directory. Doesnt have that problem discussed under the help FAQ.
Pretty darn useless program. De-awarded. -VGsatomi
You just stopped my tool project. I wanted to make a tool that could do some animation editing, and every editing you can simply do with notepad. But you just did that, and probably better than I could ever do it, so I won't even try.
Btw. you should make a FAQ on the webside, and two different forums (or just two bulletin boards), on with techincal problems, and another for suggestions.
When rendering transparent objects it will not look entirely correct if they aren't rendered in the correct order (from back to front). Checking this flag will sort them properly (in Warcraft 3, my editor does NOT support it)
Ah thank you, if by transparent you mean geosets with Blend filtermode and only one layer, you just solved me a problem. ^^
Another thing, I found that some mdl files edited with the vertex modifier can't be opened by this program. The solution is simply to convert them into mdx format and then back to mdl.
I have no idea how to update the tool here and no one else seems to know either...
Try to contact the section moderator. You could upload a new version, but I'm not sure if you can remove the old by yourself.
Thanks for the answers. Here comes the second question more detailed, it's actually a suggestion, not a question:
(WARNING! Long and technical post )
The animation function are too hard to use. If you want to animate a node's visibility, size, position or anything else, you have to write the code all by yourself. So here are some things you could do to make it easier to animate.
* All animation sequences (walk, attack, stand - 2 etc.) have some numbers you need to know to write the animation codes. These numbers are the animation frame nr., and can be seen by opening the sequence maneger, editing an animation, then the values are the interval - from/to. If you made a list of those animation intervals, that opens when the animation code dialog opens, it would be much faster to do the coding.
* When the user pushes the button to write animation code, the animation already have a default value (like visibility - 1). You could make a function that creates an "empty" code, that just tells the editor to apply the default value to every key frame. Example:
0: 1
13500: 1
29700: 1
35000: 1
176667: 1
Then the user can easily modify the value for those keyframes that are not supposed to be the default value. And you could even make a function that removes unneccecary code afterwards.
* It is possible to edit the polygons, like in Oinkerwinkle Vertex Modifyer?
It's not fully implemented yet. If you follow the link you can get a newer version with an early implementation that allows you to transform vertices (no creation/removal yet). I have no idea how to update the tool here and no one else seems to know either...
* The program wouldn't load a custom model I made. Reason: I notepad-edited the model to use a texture at a custom path instead of a build-in texture. Is there a solution? Warcraft 3 Viewer have no problem with it, shows up fine once the texture is imported.
The Editor has to access the texture. If you notepad-edited the path to "Texture.tga" then just place Texture.tga in the same folder as the mdl file is.
You can also change textures in the Texture manager in the editor as an alternative to mdl editing.
* It is possible to edit the polygons, like in Oinkerwinkle Vertex Modifyer?
* I think you should streamline the process of adding animation code to a node. There should be at least an easy reference to the frame numbers of the animation sequences, and a possibility to add an "empty line" to the script, to advoid buggy code.

Plus, in the material manager there are two filtermodes I never heard of: "Add Alpha" and "Modulate".
Modulate "multiplies" the colors of the two layers. Modulate with black gives black, modulate with white gives the original color. This render mode is used in the TFT Undead Campaign Screen to create shadows for Arthas (modulating with an almost black texture makes it darker, like a shadow).
Not entirely sure what add alpha is, but I've implemented it as additive but using the alpha channel instead of the color channel (assumed add alpha was addITIVE alpha).
Not sure what you're asking, but if you import textures you will need to remove the war3mapImported prefix of it (is done in the WE import manager).
Is it possible at all?
If by modeling you mean creating vertices and faces then no, it's not possible at the moment. I'm working on a geoset editor but it will prolly take a while to finish. If by model you mean create other stuff than geosets then it's highly possible. I guess what most people refer to model editing is the geoset editing and thus gets a but disappointed when it's not really supported (yet).
and the help is no help "the page cannot be dispayed"
Odd! Has anyone else experienced this?
...and I'd still like to know how to update the tool (follow the link for a more recent version, no major changes though)
How do you upload a new version? After clicking on "Add/Update Resource" you can only select "Add new Tool". Clicking on the Tool icon just brings you here.
One thing about system requirements (Windows 2000/XP). Ive got ME and have really no problems with using any of those tools submitted on wc3sear.ch. So, Amadithegreat, did u even try to dl this tool and try it on your system? If not then you dont have a point to blame this. And about the program: nice!
And for other model editor, check oinkerwinkle's site. It was the first model editor i used.
Thank you god! I was awaiting for a tool that will export and import .mdx files. But does the file work with 3ds max 7?
What do you mean work with max7? I bet you don't even have a legal one, cheap bastards... 3dsmax7 is a stand alone application that was not meant to work with warcraft. This tool is one made for wc3.
Well my good friend halo I thought it had a script that it uses to export and import .mdx models in Max 7 --------------------------------------- Sorry that I posted that before I tried out the program.
Thanks Magos. YOu are a great asset to the warcraft commmunity. I have seen many of your guides and they are excellent for beginners and advanced users. I look forward to a tutorial for using this new tool.
Uhg,why wont it pull out model editng tools under the "Windows" tab. How do i move/transform vertecies, edges, outlines, polys, elements or whatever you are using? I need that and then i'll be happy.

Thanks for this tool magos. I've never realy enjoyed making rts lowpoly in 3dstudio and spending even more time making them wc3 compatible(you can't just buy max5 a couple of years after it's been released). Anyways thanks again. -halo aka cmb, staby
