I think you'd convert a existing model to a supported model format for gmax and then work on it.

I can't really help you alot but,
Gmax doesn't support .mdx files for straight forward modelling right?
So you'd have to convert the .mdx to a supported model format with a converter or something to .3ds or .obj? (are those supported?) I'm not sure on this one but I think so.

oooooook i downloaded it but for some reason it crashes when i try to convert it

Make sure all the files in the zip for the converter are extracted and placed in a different folder than wc3. Make sure no programs are using the model somehow. Make sure programs related to wc3 are closed.

That program isn't really complete. It would be better if you used KMK's Importer/Exporter Script. You can find it on Wc3Campaigns.com with a search.

EDIT: The Importer/Exporter script imports without skins or animations, so you have to be careful to not delete vertices.
