how do i edit a model?

You have to right click the link and click Save Target As.

Milkshape should be pretty good, but its shareware so you have to pay for it. I use gmax, made by the people who made 3ds max. It's basically a stripped down version of 3ds max. You cna get it at www.discreet.com.
