--READ ME BEFORE POSTING--yes, the whole thing.

all right. first order of business as models mod. compress mecheons stickies.

ON THE SUBJECT OF 3DSMAX AND THE ART TOOLS...
The Art Tools work with the following versions of 3DS Max

4
5

The Art Tools DON'T work with the following versions of 3DS Max

1
2
3
6
7

So yes. If you have 6 and 7, you CAN'T use the art tools. Hell, 7 is useless for WC3 modding until someone upgrades the Dex script anyway

Model Section Submission Rules

1. Models without animations will be deleted unless they are statues, some doodads (trees, rocks, etc.). If your model does not fit in those categories, post a picture in the Art Section of your model without animations, and take it down once the finished model is submitted.

2. Models above 3000 polys will be deleted, with the exception of glue/campaign screens. They are absolutely useless.

3. ANY model that is not yours and you do not have specific permission from the creator to submit will be deleted. If it is one of Xaran’s, Cookie’s, or RCX’s models, the submitter of the model will be IP banned.

4. Textureless models, or models with a very bad skin, will be deleted. If you would like people to see your model before a texture is added, post a picture in the Art Section, and take it down once the finished model is submitted.

5. Bad geomerges will be deleted. This includes, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, un-scaled or stupid head swaps, and models where the animations look screwed up when the two, three, or more parts are combined.

6. Models that only work in wc3viewer, and not in-game are worthless, and will thus be deleted.

7. ANY models found in any of the Blizzard wc3 MPQs that are submitted will be deleted.

8. Pointless models will be deleted i.e. something like a floating footman head.

9. Posting weaponless versions of already existent models, whether from the MPQ’s or from a model posted on the site previously, is against the rules. A tutorial for creating weaponless models can be found at http://www.wc3sear.ch/viewtopic.php?t=13613 (AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS TOPIC)

SEARCHING FOR MODELS

To search for a model, use the nifty SEARCH function

If the model you find isn't up to what you want, TOO FECKING BAD. EDIT IT YOURSELF

If you don't FIND a model, TOO FECKING BAD AS WELL. GO AND MAKE YOUR OWN. OR REQUEST ONE. IN THE REQUESTS FORUM

ON THE SUBJECT OF POSTING OTHERS MODELS....

Don't upload a model unless you made it yourself, or you have been given express permission (Except with Blizzard models, but they're free source anyway)

I don't care HOW fecking good it is, if the maker WANTED it uploaded they would have done it THEMSELF

I will BAN YOU IF YOU UPLOAD SOMEONE ELSE'S MODEL

Oh, and don't give me any of that "OMG ITS JUST A MODLE" junk. Would YOU like it if I came and stole some money from you, and then said "Its just money, you can just work some more and get more"? No, you wouldn't. Same principle

Uploading any of Xaran's, Cookie's or RCX's models WILL result in an IP ban, unless you are one of those three people

I've banned people in the past for this, I'll do it again

All stickies property of Mecheon. cept this one, which is property of the me.

HOW TO ATTACH MODELS.

attaching sword and axe models you download on this site is easy. go to the Special Effect section of the trigger actions pull-down menu. one of the two options at the top of the menu will allow you to attach an imported model to a part of a different model defined by a string. in the string, you would generally type 'hand left' or 'hand right'. for Auras use 'origin'. other attachments are rare since they are hard to work with in animations.
if the model you are trying to attach a model to already has a weapon on it, it is more complicated. download one of the BLP-TGA converters available on this site or any others, and open the skin you want to attach a model to. using an image-editing program that supports alpha-data(one is The Gimp, which is availible on this site for windows and OSX), alpha out the weapon part of the skin. import that skin with the proper path, and you will have a weaponless model. you can now use the aforementioned instructions.

as to projectile attachments, simply change the projectile art in object editor to the imported model. this only works on units based on ranged untis.

if ANY of the things covered in the stickies appear in the models forum, i will lock the topic immediately and deliver a warning to the poster.

Yeah, good luck with compressing them all

You can delort them after you add them in <_< >_>

I only had them as a punishment for people posting requests here...

DEADDOG!!!! You removed all the links in the modeling/skinning program list! WHY! I got all those as a courtesy for the users!

Next time hit "edit" on the post first so you can C&P all the code as well, rather then just C&Ping the text straight off the page....

....%$#@....now I got to do it all over again....
#4
DeadDogNoGoWoofall right. first ... A tutorial for creating weaponless models can be found at http://www.wc3sear.ch/viewtopic.php?t=13613

False, this Link is just this topic. Linking seems not to be the thing you are most talented in! :P
So where can we find this tutorial really?
#5
linking not my strong point eh? maybe you should scroll down TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FRIGGIN TOPIC.
how ignorant can you be!?

Ah, that was the tutorial, I see. Sorry, that I didn't find it at the first sight, but the link above is simply useless the way it is. I'm sure I'm not the only ignorant one who doesn't find a tutorial in a post which has not even an obvious title for the meant part.
And why making a link if this link doesn't do anything except loading the same page again?! If it was an anchor, OK, but it's not even that! Just say that it will be explained in the following and everyone will understand. Also people who are as ignorant as me! :P

I agree with Waldbär.
A sticky should really be simple, and quick to look through.
Create some headlines, and drop the stupidANDuseless comments.
That is all for today *falls to sleep on computer* ~_~

Oh, and vote Mecheon for request forum mod... If we ever have a vote for a request forum mod <_<

And then you wonder why people don't read your stickies through???
I only read further, because I followed a link from the news site, so I knew there had to be some rules somewhere in the post.

CLEAR UP ALL RULE STICKIES ...please?
#8
I'd like to make a say. Rule 8 that you added, shouldn't. Those "useless" models, like the footman head, aren't useless, my friend has used that head in many maps, and used many other seemingly useless models.
#9
ok, if you insist on complaining, i will delete those two lines. there already are headlines to the different sections of the topic.

and your friend REALLY needs a map idea.
#10
The head is USELESS, completely and utterly useless. Good job with the new rules, now you just have to enforce them... :P

What is Wc3sear.ch's stand on technically copyrighted material? Such as the Star Wars models. Technically copyrighted by Lucas Films, however they are permited. Does this apply always? For example models from Halo, James Bond, etc?
#12
none of that stuff is copyrighted. its an imitation. if i draw an x-wing, rent-a-cops arent going to come and take me away to jail.

their ideas arent copyrighted. only the exact material.

but the names are copyrighted...

but the names are copyrighted...

That's theoretically true, but practically
1. Nobody will catch you because you made e.g. a General Grievous Model for War3 - it's advertisement for StarWars and Lucas Arts won't be angry to you because you advertise for their products.
2. It's just yuck to copyright other names than company names, I think. Change a letter, call it General Greevous, and nobody can accuse anything to you. So if you won't to be 200% legal, just do this.

Actually, if names are copyrighted, similar names are forbidden as well (as in, calling a black unit with a mask "Dorth Vader" or "Darth Veter" would still be illegal.)
Good post, but, you do sound a bit emotional ddngw :)
